Week of August 27, 2012

It's hard to believe that we are in the last week of August. We have a busy week ahead of us at JME and in Room 145.
Beginning Monday August 27, 2012 I will be returning back to the classroom. I am very excited about this and look forward to working with you and your child. If you need to contact me, please call the school (912)368-3114 or email me at fkelso@liberty.k12.ga.us.

A Look Ahead

  • Book Fair Week: Our school wide book fair begins Monday, August 27th. We will visit Monday for your child to make a wish list. If you would like your child to purchase anything, please send the money in a marked envelope and I will send him/her up during the day to get the items.
  • Back to School Night: Tuesday, August 28. You are invited to visit the school. Areas will be set up with more information about some of our programs, like the I CARE program and computer checkout.
  • Muffins with Mom: Friday, August 31, all mothers/grandmothers are invited to have breakfast with their students. This  event begins at 7:20 and ends at 7:40.
  • AR/Library Visit:  We go to the library every Tuesday. Your child will check out one book and will return it the following Tuesday. If a book is lost payment must be made to JME for the replacement cost. The AR program has not begun yet so there are no goals set for your child nor are there any tests for them on the books. I will let you know when the system is up and running.
  • Popcorn: Popcorn sales have begun! Every Friday your child may purchase popcorn for $.50 a bag. Please send money in an envelope marked POPCORN so that I can know to add your child's name to the list.Remember-I am unable to make change so you must send in the exact amount.

Specials and Lunch

We go to specials Monday through Friday. Please remember, tennis shoes must be worn of gym day.
Monday       (Gym)
Tuesday       (Music)
Wednesday  (Art)
Thursday     (Gym)
Friday         (Computer Lab)

We had a minor revision for lunch. Our lunch period is 11:19-11:49.

This Week in Room 145

This week we will begin reading together, Frog and Toad Are Friends. This is the story of two somewhat unlikely companions who, despite their differences, are the best of friends. Frog is eager, energetic and independent, while Toad is shy, slower to act and takes comfort in his friendship with Frog. This collection of stories is a great springboard for talking about how our differences make us unique and even though we have differences, we have much to offer each other in friendship.

In Math, we will continue to explore the numerals 0 through 10 with a special focus on 3, 2, 1, and 0. It would be most beneficial if you practice counting with your child as well as printing the numerals.

The letter Ll will be reviewed from last week and the vowel Oo will be introduced. We will study Oo as a short vowel (octopus, October). Throughout the week we will create an Oo word bank and practice printing both Ll and Oo.

Living and non-living things will be the theme of science and rules and good citizenship will be the focus of social studies.

JUST A FEW REMINDERS.

Please continue to practice the alphabet and number recognition with your child. It is also very important that he/she practice name printing, letter printing, and number printing (0-10).

MONEY. Inside your child's folder is a clear envelope. If you send money to school please place it in an envelope marked with your child's name and the purpose of the money. If these steps are not followed, I will not accept the money.

ABSENCES. If your child is absent from school you must send an excuse within three days of your childs return to class.

FORMS.PLEASE, when returning forms to school, print your name and your child's name neatly on the form. I have several forms that parents have signed but I am unable to read. This will save both of us time and maybe a tree or two.

EXTRA CLOTHES. It is not uncommon for children to have bathroom accidents in kindergarten. Therefore, please send an extra set of clothing to school with your child. The extra set should include a uniform top and bottom, socks and underwear. Please put the clothes in a bag marked with your child's name.

Welcome Class of 2025!

Welcome! It is my pleasure to welcome you and your child to Joseph Martin Elementary School and to Room 145. My name is Frank Kelso and I am looking forward to having your child in my classroom this school year. Together, we are going to have a wonderful year.

This year, the State of Georgia and the Liberty County Board of Education are implementing a new set of learning standards, The Common Core Georgia Performance Standards (CCGPS). The Common Core Standards are an initiative of the National Governors'  Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers. These standards have been implemented in almost all of the United States. These standards are aligned to the highest international and national standards and have an increased emphasis on the following:

Reading more informational and complex texts
Writing to justify thinking and reasoning and writing for more authentic purposes
Engaging in more problem-solving and problem-based learning
 Making more real-world, relevant connections
 Assessing learning at higher levels.

As we implement these standards, our classroom will be an even more engaging setting as students are provided with increased opportunities for collaboration, conversation and problem solving. Kindergarten provides a solid foundation for the learning of common core standards.
